Hydroxycut’s extensive line of weight-loss products used to be among the most effective on the market, thanks to their star fat-burning ingredient, ephedra. Then the FDA recalled products containing ephedra due to adverse reactions like dizziness, seizures, and even death.
Hydroxycut revamped their product with an all-natural list of ingredients, but things got worse when the new pills turned out not only to be ineffective, but even more unsafe than the original. Hydroxycut failed miserably to meet up with our five criteria.

Safety and Quality
On May 1, 2009, the FDA recalled 14 Hydroxycut products, citing 23 reports of serious health problems—including jaundice and severe liver failure—and one death.
While the FDA has yet to determine what ingredient/ingredients caused the Hydroxicut side-effects, our experts found a few red flags on the label.
Hydroxycut contains a blended ingredient called Hydroxycut Tea, which is a mixture of caffeine, green tea extract (which contains caffeine), and guarana extract (which contains a lot of caffeine).
Since caffeine boosts energy and suppresses appetite, it’s a common ingredient in diet pills. But the extreme combination and high dosage in Hydroxycut is worrisome. One capsule of Hydroxycut Max contains as much caffeine as six cups of coffee. Throw in a non-fat caramel macchiato at the end of your workout, and you’ll be running on enough caffeine to make a sloth break dance. Adverse side-effects from too much caffeine include headaches, dizziness, increased heart rate, and insomnia.
Effectiveness
Side effects aside, does Hydroxycut work? The answer is no.
Hydroxicut with ephedra works, but the none of the ingredients in the new mix are proven fat-burners. The studies promoted on their website have a sample size of just 90 moderately obese people, who aside from taking Hydroxycut, were placed on a 2000-calories-per-day diet. Any weight loss that took place is more likely to have been caused by the reduction in calories rather than the diet pills themselves.
